Thrillers

 WHAT GENRES DO I LIKE?

Favorite Genre

The genre I like to watch the most is thriller. I think it's one of the most exciting genres because it combines mystery, suspense, and sometimes even horror or drama. Thrillers usually make you pay attention to all the little details, and I like how they can mess with your mind and make you question what's really going on.

Why?

What I like most about thrillers is the suspense. I enjoy the feeling of not knowing what's going to happen next and trying to piece things together before the characters figure it out. Thrillers also usually have darker or more psychological themes, which make them feel more serious and intense than just a regular action movie. They usually have interesting characters too, because you never know who you can trust or what their real motives are.

This clip shows why I like thrillers because the suspense comes from how ordinary everything seems right before the shocking twist. The quick cuts, the screeching violin sound effects, and the fact that you don't even clearly see the killer at first all create intense fear and mystery. It keeps you hooked because you want to know who the killer is and why this happened. That kind of build-up and sudden reveal is what makes thrillers so exciting to watch.

Classics

Some classic thrillers that I think are definitely part of the corpus of the genre are Psycho (1960), Se7en (1995), and The Silence of the Lambs (1991). Psycho is a big one because it kind of redefined the thriller and horror genres with its shocking twists and creepy atmosphere. Se7en is another one that stands out because of how dark and disturbing it is while still building mystery and suspense. The Silence of the Lambs is considered a classic because of how it combined crime investigation with psychological tension, especially with the characters Hannibal Lecter and Clarice. All of these movies helped shape what people expect from thrillers, which is why they belong in the "corpus" of the genre.

Film Opening

For my film opening, I would like to work in the thriller genre. One of my early ideas is to create something with a mysterious atmosphere, kind of like Donnie Darko but not exactly the same. For example, I was thinking about starting with an ordinary, calm scene, like a character waking up in their room or walking through a quiet neighborhood, but then slowly adding unsettling details that make the audience realize something is off. Maybe there could be a strange sound, a shadow that doesn't make sense, or an odd object that hints at something deeper. I want the audience to feel like they're being pulled into a mystery without fully understanding it yet. The goal would be to create a sense of unease right away, so people want to keep watching to figure out what's happening.
